Sustainable Design

Armetco Systems is proud to participate in the LEED Environmental Design Program sponsored by the United States Green Building Council. This guide outlines the many ways that Armetco Systems products can contribute to LEED certification.

Credit 1. Optimizing Energy Performance
Achieve increasing levels of energy performance above the prerequisite standard to reduce environmental Impact associated with excessive energy use.
1 to 10 Option 1- Whole Building Energy Simulation
Demonstrate a percentage of improvement in the building performance rating compared to the baseline building performance rating for energy systems per ASHRAE / IESNA Standard 90.1-2004 as demonstrated by Section 11 of that Standard

Materials & Resources
LEED Credit and Sub-Credit Potential Points LEED Requirements Armetco Products
Credit 4.1 Recycled Content (Specify 10%)
Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.
1 Use materials recycled content such that the sum of the pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content constitutes at least 10% of the total value of the materials in the project.

Credit 4.2 Recycled Content (Specify 20%)
Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.
(4.1) + 1 Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of the pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content constitutes at least 20% of the total value of the materials in the project.

Credit 5.1 Regional Materials: 10% Extracted Processed & Manufactured Regionally
Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impact resulting from transportation.
1 Use building materials or products that have been extracted harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% of the total material value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage shall contribute to the regional value.

Indoor Environmental Air Quality
LEED Credit and Sub-Credit Potential Points LEED Requirements Armetco Products
8.1 Daylight and Views
(Daylight 75% of Spaces)

Provide for the building occupants with a connection between indoor spaces and the outdoors through the introduction of daylight and views into the regularly occupied areas of the building.
1 Achieve minimum glazing factor of 2% in a minimum of 75% of all regularly occupied areas used for visual tasks. Some low occupancy support areas are excluded.

8.2 Daylight and Views
(Daylight 90% of Spaces)

Provide for the building occupants with a connection between indoor spaces and the outdoors through the introduction of daylight and views into the regularly occupied areas of the building.
1 Achieve direct line of sight to the outdoor environment via vision glazing for building occupants in 90% of all regularly occupied areas of the building. Some low occupancy support areas are excluded.

Innovation & Design Process
LEED Credit and Sub-Credit Potential Points LEED Requirements Armetco Products
Credit 1 - 1.4 Innovation in Design
Provide design teams and projects the opportunity to be awarded points for exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED for New Construction Green Building Rating System and / or innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by the LEED for New Construction Green Building Rating System.
1 to 4 In writing, identify the intent of the proposed innovation credit, the proposed requirement for compliance, the proposed submittals to demonstrate compliance, and the design approach (strategies) that might be used to meet the requirements.

Summary

The LEED Program has gained popularity and recognition over the past several years and has become the premier sustainability design tool in the building industry. LEED focuses on the constuction of buildings that have minimal impact on the environment during construction, occupation and reclamation. LEED recognizes that utilizing recycled materials is an important part of minimizing environmental impact. This recognition is the driving force for using Armetco Systems products. The relatively high percentage of recycled aluminum in our products ensures that Armetco Systems products can provide a significant contribution to earning LEED Points. In addition, our multiple fabrication facilities provide regional manufacturing centers that decrease transportation costs and related fuel consumption and help to enhance local economies, both of which are deemed environmentally preferable in LEED documentation.
